President Lee Orders Resources to Combat Cyber Attacks on Financial Firms

Seoul:President Lee Jae Myung instructed the government to allocate personnel and resources to minimize the damage from a recent series of hacking attacks targeting financial firms.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee announced the directive during a Cabinet meeting following revelations that customer information at seven companies, including Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, and Shinhan Bank, was compromised.

Lee expressed concern over the possible use of artificial intelligence in these attacks, which has intensified public anxiety. He emphasized the need for a swift and thorough assessment of the situation and urged the commitment of resources to mitigate the damage.

The police have initiated an investigation into the cyber attacks, deploying a 28-member team to examine potential violations of the information and communications network law.

President Lee underscored the importance of maintaining high vigilance across government, business, and society as a whole, highlighting that AI-driven hacking methods are expanding the scope of damage. He stressed the necessity of developing security capabilities to detect and block attacks proactively, rather than reacting to incidents after they occur.
