WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Republican National Committee adopted a new policy platform on Monday, stressing the need for U.S. allies to fulfill their financial commitments toward "common defense." This policy push comes as former President Donald Trump intensifies his campaign for re-election, aiming to recapture the presidency in the upcoming November 5 general election against incumbent President Joe Biden.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the 2024 GOP platform includes 20 key promises that address major election-season issues such as defense, trade, immigration, and abortion rights. These commitments are aligned with Trump's longstanding motto to "make America great again." The platform promises to maintain America's military as the strongest globally, end inflation, halt what it refers to as the "migration invasion," establish the U.S. as the leading global energy producer, prevent "World War Three," and implement an Iron Dome missile defense shield across the country.
The platform was introduced amid increasing calls for Biden to withdraw from the race following a challenging debate performance last month. It outlines a vision for strengthening international alliances by mandating allied nations to invest more significantly in collective defense efforts and restoring peace in Europe. "Republicans will strengthen alliances by ensuring that our allies must meet their obligations to invest in our common defense and by restoring peace to Europe. We will stand with Israel and seek peace in the Middle East," the document states.
Additionally, the platform proposes to "rebuild our alliance network in the region to ensure a future of peace, stability, and prosperity" and supports strong, sovereign, and independent nations in the Indo-Pacific to thrive in peace and commerce. The platform also criticizes the Biden administration's foreign policy, claiming it has diminished America's safety and international standing.
Key policy directions include a comprehensive approach to national security, emphasizing a foreign policy "centered on the most essential American interests," and promises to ensure the U.S. military remains the "most modern, lethal, and powerful" force worldwide. On trade, the platform backs Trump-proposed baseline tariffs on imported goods and a robust response to "unfair trading practices."
On the issue of abortion, the platform states, "We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that no person can be denied life or liberty without due process, and that the states are, therefore, free to pass laws protecting those rights." This stance supports Trump's view that abortion regulations should be determined by individual states.
The platform, detailed in 10 chapters, is expected to be finalized by the full party convention body next week.
