New York: South Korean artist Ayoung Kim has been named the winner of this year’s LG Guggenheim Award for her innovative work at the intersection of art and technology, LG Group said Tuesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the LG Guggenheim Award was launched in 2023 through a partnership between LG Group and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. It aims to support contemporary artists who push the boundaries of digital art, with the award winner receiving a prize of US$100,000.
Kim is recognized for her use of live action, motion capture, and animation software, alongside game engines and image-generation technologies. Her work explores the integration of art with artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR), expanding the possibilities of digital storytelling.
The LG Guggenheim Art and Technology Initiative was started in 2023 as a collaboration between the South Korean company and the museum in New York to support artists working at the intersection of art and technology for the next five years.
The award’s first recipient was Stephanie Dinkins, a Brooklyn-based artist, educator, and AI practitioner, followed by Taiwanese American artist and filmmaker Shu Lea Cheang.
