BRUSSELS: A South Korean delegation, comprising intelligence and government officials, is set to visit NATO headquarters in Brussels this week to provide a briefing on North Korea's deployment of troops to Russia. This development comes amid growing concerns about North Korean military involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as reports indicate troop movements in Russia's Kursk region. According to Yonhap News Agency, the delegation is led by First Deputy Director Hong Jang-won of South Korea's National Intelligence Service. The visit follows a request from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a phone conversation with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol last week. The talks will primarily focus on the increasing military ties between North Korea and Russia, with particular attention to the activities and deployment of North Korean troops in Russia. The South Korean delegation includes senior military officials and diplomats who may also discuss potential support measures for Ukraine. These measure s could involve sending a team of South Korean officials to Ukraine to monitor North Korean troop activities. The proposed monitoring team would likely comprise intelligence officials and North Korea specialists, with the possibility of participating in interrogations of captured North Korean personnel. Specialists in psychological warfare might also join to encourage North Korean troop surrender. Other support measures under consideration include the provision of weapons to Ukraine. While South Korea has provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine, it has not yet sent arms directly. President Yoon recently indicated that South Korea might reconsider its stance on providing military aid to Ukraine, dependent on the extent of military collaboration between Russia and North Korea. The issue of North Korean troop deployment will also be addressed when South Korea's Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun visits Washington for discussions with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
