Rockville: Samsung Biologics Co., the biotech arm of Samsung Group, announced that its U.S. unit has acquired a U.S. biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility from GSK plc for 413.6 billion won (US$280 million) as part of efforts to strengthen its global supply network.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Samsung Biologics America has signed an agreement to acquire a 100 percent stake in Human Genome Sciences from the British multinational biotechnology firm, with the acquisition scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2026, the company stated in a press release.
The strategic investment secures Samsung Biologics' first U.S.-based manufacturing facility. The company plans additional investments to expand the site's production capacity and technical capabilities to meet growing global demand for critical biologic medicines.
"This acquisition is a testament to our unwavering commitment to advancing global healthcare and bolstering our manufacturing capabilities in the United States," said John Rim, chief executive officer of Samsung Biologics. "The investment will help ensure a reliable and stable supply of life-saving therapeutics."
Located in Rockville, Maryland, the facility sits at the center of a major U.S. biopharmaceutical cluster and comprises two manufacturing plants with a combined drug substance capacity of 60,000 liters. The site supports both clinical and commercial production across small- to large-scale manufacturing, the company stated.
By integrating the facility into its global network, Samsung Biologics aims to provide clients with flexible, multi-site manufacturing options in both the U.S. and South Korea, ensuring a reliable supply of life-saving therapeutics to patients in the U.S., the company added.
The company operates five plants in Songdo, west of Seoul, with a total capacity of 785,000 liters.
