SEOUL — Unionized workers at Samsung Electronics Co. are planning a three-day strike this week, following a breakdown in negotiations with management over wages and working conditions.
According to Yonhap News Agency, which represents 28,000 members, the strike is scheduled from Monday to Wednesday and aims to disrupt production. While the union constitutes about 22 percent of Samsung's total workforce of approximately 125,000, the actual number of participants in the strike is not yet clear, and the impact on production might be minimal. The union members will conduct rallies and other strike activities outside Samsung's facility in Hwaseong, located 45 kilometers south of Seoul. Despite several rounds of negotiations since January, the parties remain at odds over issues such as wage increases, vacation policies, and bonuses. The union's demands include a day off for all employees and a substantial wage increase for the 855 members who did not agree to the 2024 salary negotiation terms. Additionally, they seek more paid leave and compensation for losses suffered during previous unpaid strikes. Following a one-day strike in June—the first in the company's history—the NSEU has threatened a f urther five-day strike starting July 15 if no progress is made in the ongoing negotiations.
