Gwangju: Samsung Electronics Co. is considering the southwestern city of Gwangju as the site for a new semiconductor production facility, its chairman said Monday. Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong stated that Gwangju is the candidate for the new base, which would complement the company's existing semiconductor production bases concentrated in the wider Seoul metropolitan area.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee made the remarks during a televised briefing in which President Lee Jae Myung unveiled the government's "three mega projects" initiative. This strategy aims at strengthening South Korea's competitiveness in advanced technologies and transforming the country into an industrial powerhouse in the era of artificial intelligence.
Under the initiative, the tech giant also plans to expand its robotics investment in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province. Additionally, Samsung is set to build high-bandwidth memory (HBM) production facilities in Chungcheong Province.
