Significant Events in Korean History on November 15

SEOUL — November 15 marks several notable events in Korean history. In 1988, North Korea proposed deputy premier-level political and military talks with South Korea. In the same year, Samsung Electronics Co., now recognized as the world's second-largest chipmaker, developed 1MB RAM (random access memory), becoming the second entity worldwide to achieve this technological feat.

According to Yonhap News Agency, In 1995, former President Roh Tae-woo was detained on corruption charges related to his involvement in a 1979 military coup and the 1980 massacre of pro-democracy protestors in Gwangju, located 267 kilometers south of Seoul. Roh, who was elected president in 1988 following democratic reforms, was convicted in 1996 and pardoned in 1997 after decisions by then President Kim Young-sam and then President-elect Kim Dae-jung.

A significant summit between South Korea and China took place on this day in 2005. In 2017, South Korea and Canada solidified a standing bilateral currency swap agreement to enhance financial exchanges between the two nations.

In 2018, North Korea proposed creating cross-border international air routes with South Korea during the first-ever inter-Korean aviation cooperation meeting held in Kaesong. This meeting was part of a series of dialogues following the third summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang.

Lastly, in 2020, Korean Air Lines Co., South Korea's largest carrier, announced its plan to acquire Asiana Airlines Inc. in a deal valued at 1.8 trillion won (US$1.3 billion), a move set to create the world's 10th-largest airline by fleet size.
