ICHEON — A devastating fire at a pig farm in Icheon, located south of Seoul, resulted in the death of more than 18,000 pigs on Monday, as confirmed by local officials. The fire represents a significant loss for the farming community and raises concerns about fire safety measures at agricultural facilities.According to Yonhap News Agency, the blaze was reported at 5:45 a.m. and quickly spread through the facility, engulfing four out of six barns. The fire led to the death of approximately 16,000 piglets and 2,300 sows, while all 19 individuals present at the farm, including foreign workers, were evacuated without any reported human casualties. The response involved 110 firefighters and 36 pieces of equipment, including pumpers, to manage and ultimately extinguish the fire by around 10 a.m.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage. The incident underscores the importance of safety measures and emergency preparedness in preventing such tragedies in the future.
