SEOUL – In a recent meeting in Seoul, Agriculture Minister Song Mi-ryung and World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Cindy McCain discussed strategies to enhance humanitarian food aid and launch new relief initiatives.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Food and Rural Affairs, the meeting was part of South Korea's effort to assume a greater role in combating global hunger. South Korea has increased its annual rice donation to the WFP to 100,000 tons this year, up from 50,000 tons, benefiting countries like Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Uganda. During the discussions, McCain commended South Korea for its transition from a recipient to a donor of international food aid, emphasizing that Seoul's contributions provide hope in the global fight against hunger.
Furthermore, the Ministry revealed that South Korea and the WFP have agreed to collaborate on school food programs in Somalia, Laos, and Guinea. South Korea also expressed its commitment to join the School Meals Coalition, an initiative that aims to enhance the quality of food offered to students worldwide.
