PARIS — South Korea secured the bronze medal in the women's table tennis team event at the Paris Olympics, defeating Germany in a decisive 3-0 match on Saturday. The South Korean team, consisting of Shin Yu-bin, Jeon Ji-hee, and Lee Eun-hye, overcame their German counterparts at South Paris Arena 4.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean trio triumphed over Shan Xiaona, Wan Yuan, and Annett Kaufmann by winning one doubles match and two singles matches. This victory marks South Korea's second medal in the women's team event since its inception at the Olympics in 2008, replicating their initial success of a bronze medal in that year.
The competition began with Shin and Jeon facing off against Wan and Shan in a tightly contested doubles match. The South Korean pair won 3-2, with scores of 11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 10-12, and 11-8. Despite facing a match point against them at 10-9 in the fourth game and falling behind 7-4 in the decisive fifth game, Shin and Jeon rallied to secure the victory.
Lee Eun-hye, making her Olympic debut at the age of 29, extended South Korea's lead by defeating Kaufmann 3-0 in the singles rounds with scores of 11-8, 11-9, and 11-2. Lee overcame a deficit in the second game and dominated the third, setting the stage for Jeon to close out the match.
Jeon, in what might be her final Olympic appearance at 31, decisively defeated Shan 3-0 in the final singles match with consistent scores of 11-6, showcasing the team's strength and securing the medal.
This achievement not only underscores South Korea's enduring prowess in table tennis but also highlights significant individual milestones, such as Shin Yu-bin's second medal of these games and Jeon Ji-hee's first Olympic medal.
