South Korea Conducts Helicopter Evacuation of Citizens from Haiti

SEOUL — The South Korean foreign ministry confirmed the successful evacuation of two South Korean citizens from Haiti, where escalating gang violence has become a significant concern. The operation, carried out via helicopter on Tuesday, transported the individuals from the capital, Port-au-Prince, to the Dominican Republic, aligning with their requests.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the decision to limit disclosure of further details comes as a measure to protect the safety of other South Koreans remaining in Haiti, estimated to be around 70. This evacuation underscores the ongoing safety concerns for foreigners in Haiti following the increased violence and poverty since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise. "We will continue to explore various safety measures for the safety of our people staying in Haiti," the ministry stated.
