South Korea to Send Letter to UNSC Demanding North Korean Accountability for DMZ Mine Blast

Seoul:South Korea is preparing to send a letter to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) president, urging North Korea to apologize and take responsibility for a recent land mine blast that violated the Korean War Armistice Agreement, According to South Korean foreign ministry.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean military determined that the September 21st blasts in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) were caused by North Korean mines planted south of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), resulting in injuries to three South Korean soldiers, two of whom were seriously hurt.

The letter will detail that the blast was caused by land mines planted by North Korean troops, demanding an apology and responsible action from Pyongyang. It will also call for dialogue to prevent further escalation and restore trust, as noted by ministry spokesperson Park Doo-soon. Additionally, the letter will address Pyongyang's attempts to mischaracterize legitimate South Korean military activities as provocations and shift the blame for rising tensions.

The letter is expected to be sent under the name of South Korea's ambassador to the U.N. on Thursday (New York time). The South Korean government is coordinating with Greece, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the UNSC, to ensure the letter is circulated promptly among council members.

North Korea has denied involvement in the incident and warned of potential retaliation if South Korea proceeds with corresponding actions. During a recent parliamentary audit, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun mentioned that Seoul is reviewing various diplomatic responses to the incident, with four potential options at the UNSC sending the letter, seeking a presidential statement, pursuing a UNSC resolution, or taking no action.

The South Korean government has not dismissed the possibility of imposing unilateral sanctions should North Korea fail to respond to the letter, with considerations being given to their effectiveness and practical benefits before deciding on further steps.
