Washington: New President Donald Trump vowed Monday to stop the United States from being “taken advantage of,” put “America first,” and usher in a “golden age of America,” as he was sworn in as the nation’s 47th president. During his swearing-in ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda, Trump, 78, emphasized his America First credo, as his second four-year term is anticipated to bring major shifts in U.S. policies on alliances, trade, and other significant issues. Vice President J.D. Vance was also sworn in during the event.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump declared that the “golden age of America begins right now,” and promised that the country would flourish and regain respect worldwide. He assured that America would become the envy of every nation and vowed not to allow the country to be taken advantage of any longer. Trump’s commitment to placing America first was reiterated throughout his inaugural address, where he promised to overhaul the nation’s trade system to protect American workers and families.

Trump outlined his plan to immediately begin implementing changes, including signing a series of executive orders on his first day in office. These orders include declaring a national emergency at the U.S.’ southern border, deploying troops to prevent illegal immigration, and designating cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. He emphasized that these actions were aimed at restoring America and promoting a revolution of common sense.

As the oldest president to be inaugurated, Trump is also noted for being only the second president to serve non-consecutive terms, following Grover Cleveland. Due to frigid temperatures, the swearing-in ceremony was moved indoors, marking the first indoor inaugural event since Ronald Reagan’s second term in 1985. Despite the change in location, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies distributed 220,000 tickets for those who planned to attend, with many opting to watch the ceremony via livestream.

Inauguration Day began with a service at St. John’s Episcopal Church followed by a meeting with outgoing President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden at the White House. The swearing-in ceremony was highlighted by Trump placing his hand on two Bibles-one from his childhood and the Lincoln Bible-while reciting the oath of office administered by Chief Justice John Roberts.

Later, Trump was scheduled to return to the White House for an Oval Office signing ceremony, where he is expected to sign numerous executive orders aimed at reversing Biden’s policy initiatives and advancing his America First agenda. Trump’s return to office is anticipated to bring changes in diplomatic strategies, focusing on reducing America’s overseas engagements and addressing trade deficits.

South Korea, dealing with political uncertainty following the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, may face challenges in policy coordination with the Trump administration amidst these changes.
