WASHINGTON—Former President Donald Trump emphasized his administration's achievements in securing the release of Americans held in North Korea as current focus centers on a significant prisoner exchange with Russia. Trump discussed these points during a Thursday interview with Fox Business, comparing his diplomatic successes with those of the current administration.
According to Yonhap News Agency, his efforts during his presidency involved negotiations that led to the repatriation of individuals from North Korea, which he described as more challenging than other international prisoner recovery efforts. "I got people back from North Korea. That's tougher than any other place to get people back," Trump stated, referring to his interactions with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Notably, in 2018, North Korea released three U.S. citizens as a gesture of goodwill before the historic summit in Singapore between Trump and Kim.
The recent prisoner swap, hailed as the largest of its kind in the post-Soviet era, involved the exchange of 16 people, including journalists and political prisoners, for eight Russians detained in the U.S. and other countries. Trump criticized the complexity and timing of this deal, suggesting that such negotiations could have been handled more effectively under his administration. He also noted that during his time in office, he managed to secure the release of 59 individuals without financial concessions, a point of pride in his negotiation strategy.
Trump's comments highlight the ongoing comparison of diplomatic approaches between his administration and that of President Joe Biden, especially in the context of high-stakes international dealings.
