U.S. Takes Action Against North Korean IT Worker Schemes Impacting American Firms

Baku:The U.S. Justice Department has taken decisive measures against North Korean remote IT worker schemes that affected over 70 American companies, generating millions of dollars in revenue allegedly linked to the North Korean regime. These actions include an indictment, two arrests, and the seizure of 187 computers in Ohio and Texas, used by North Korean IT workers to fraudulently obtain employment in the United States.

According to Yonhap News Agency, North Korean IT workers employed stolen or fabricated identities and virtual private networks to secure remote jobs at American companies. They were supported by U.S.-based facilitators who hosted company-issued laptops and transferred earnings to accounts controlled by North Korea.

The indictment revealed that the scheme impacted more than 70 U.S. companies across various sectors, such as healthcare, communications, retail, and manufacturing. It generated approximately $3 million in revenue, which is believed to have been funneled to North Korean-controlled entities under U.S. sanctions.

As part of the coordinated actions, U.S. authorities arrested two American nationals on charges including wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft. The Federal Bureau of Investigation also conducted searches and other law enforcement activities at over 40 residences in Texas, suspected to be operating as "laptop farms" between September 21 and 25.

Additionally, the U.S. State Department has offered potential rewards of up to $5 million to support international efforts in disrupting North Korea's illicit financial activities, including cybercrime, money laundering, and sanctions evasion.
