Nagoya:South Korea: Head coach Lee Min-sung praised Celtic FC winger Yang Hyun-jun for his influential role in South Korea's men's football gold medal success at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, despite Yang being sidelined due to injury during the final match.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee Min-sung chose Yang as his personal MVP, acknowledging his off-field contributions to the team's success. Yang, who played only in the initial group stage match against Qatar, was credited for his mentorship, especially to younger players like his roommate Yang Min-hyeok.
Yang Hyun-jun suffered a hamstring injury after recording an assist in the 4-1 win over Qatar, which forced him to miss subsequent matches. Despite this, his support to teammates, particularly Yang Min-hyeok, was invaluable. Yang Min-hyeok, who had faced challenges with his Belgian club Westerlo, played a crucial role in the final, assisting the winning goal against Japan.
Yang Hyun-jun was one of the over-age players in a squad primarily composed of under-23 athletes. His guidance helped foster team cohesion, with Yang Min-hyeok particularly benefiting from his roommate's advice and encouragement. Yang Hyun-jun's efforts to unify the team extended beyond mentorship, as he also sought to build camaraderie through simple gestures like buying coffee.
Yang Hyun-jun expressed pride in Yang Min-hyeok's performance, noting his ability to focus and perform under pressure in the final. Despite his own injury, Yang Hyun-jun's leadership off the field was a significant factor in South Korea's triumph.
