SEOUL—The National Police Agency reported a record number of 219 South Korean fugitives repatriated from overseas in the first half of this year, marking a 12.9 percent increase from the previous year.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the rise in repatriations is attributed to the implementation of a new fugitive management system introduced in February. This system categorizes fugitives based on the severity of their crimes and the likelihood of arrest, allowing for more focused and effective tracking of high-priority cases. Significant successes of the system include the capture of a key figure in the Lime Asset Management Co. scandal. The majority of repatriations occurred from China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Cambodia. The police aim to continue leveraging this system in their efforts to apprehend fugitives in the latter half of the year.
