Ex-President Lee Advocates for Youth-Led Economic Growth in AI Era

SEOUL – Former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak emphasized the crucial role of young entrepreneurs in driving the nation's economic growth in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Lee, who served as the president from February 2008 to February 2013, expressed these views during a breakfast meeting with CEOs from member companies of the Korea International Trade Association in Seoul on Tuesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the era of AI presents a unique opportunity for young business leaders to adapt and excel. He encouraged them to generate innovative ideas to fuel South Korea's economic progress. Lee highlighted the agility and rapid adaptation skills of the younger generation as key factors in the nation's advancement in the AI landscape. Further, he praised the resilience and determination of South Korean companies in the face of external challenges, expressing confidence in their ability to overcome obstacles.

Lee also emphasized the need for robust governmental support in terms of legal and regulatory frameworks to facilitate profitable business operations. Reflecting on his presidential term, he recalled his efforts in fostering diplomatic relations with China, particularly through close communication with then-President Hu Jintao. These efforts, he noted, were instrumental in establishing friendly ties with the neighboring country.

The former president's remarks come in the backdrop of his retirement, following a conviction for bribery and embezzlement in 2020, which led to a 17-year prison sentence. Last year, Lee received a special pardon, canceling the remainder of his prison term and a substantial amount of unpaid fines.
