Hanwha Aerospace Secures Contract to Supply NATO Standard Artillery Charges to BAE Systems

Seoul – Hanwha Aerospace Co., a defense industry affiliate of South Korea's Hanwha Group, has announced a significant deal to supply a modular charge system (MCS) for 155-millimeter artillery shells to BAE Systems Inc., a major British defense firm. The contract, valued at 175.9 billion won (approximately US$135.4 million), marks the first instance of such an export for Hanwha.

According to Yonhap News Agency, The MCS, a cylinder-shaped propellant, plays a crucial role in dispatching warheads to their targets. Hanwha Aerospace began the development of this system in 2019, amidst rising geopolitical tensions in Europe, and completed it earlier this year.

Company officials noted that if Britain opts to acquire South Korea's K9 howitzers for its self-propelled artillery project, a comprehensive package including the K9s and MCS could be exported. Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il expressed enthusiasm for the deal, highlighting its significance in bolstering cooperation with British defense companies and supporting South Korea's arms exports while contributing to global security.

Additionally, Hanwha Aerospace has signed a memorandum of understanding with Babcock International Group to enhance bilateral cooperation in global projects across land, water, and air.
