According to Yonhap News Agency, In 1965, South Korea established diplomatic relations with Gambia, marking the beginning of formal international ties between the two nations. By 1984, South Korea and Qatar entered into an economic accord, further expanding South Korea's global economic partnerships. On this day in 2009, officials from South and North Korea convened for their first dialogue in over a year, centered around the joint industrial complex in Kaesong, North Korea. The talks were particularly significant as they addressed the detention of a South Korean worker by North Korean authorities, who had been held on accusations of criticizing the North’s political system. In a major development on this date in 2018, North Korea announced its decision to suspend nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests and dismantle the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, a declaration that came shortly before a scheduled meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
