SEOUL - Ulsan Hyundai FC's defender, Kim Young-gwon, has been voted the most valuable player (MVP) of the K League 1 for the year 2023. Kim, 33, received a majority of votes from a panel of media, head coaches, and team captains, securing his first MVP title in the league.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim garnered 55 out of 115 media votes, six from head coaches, and four from club captains, totaling 44.13 points. This score edged out Pohang Steelers' Zeca, who finished with 41.76 points. Kim's performance this season was pivotal for Ulsan, as he appeared in 32 of their 38 matches and completed 2,268 passes, the highest for his team and third-highest in the league.

Kim's successful season at Ulsan follows his stints in Japan and China. His recognition as MVP marks the second consecutive year an Ulsan player has won this award, following midfielder Lee Chung-yong last season. Under Kim's defense, Ulsan clinched their second consecutive K League 1 title on October 29, finishing with a 12-point lead over Pohang Steelers.

Additionally, Ulsan's head coach, Hong Myung-bo, received the Coach of the Year award for the second year in a row, amassing 45.02 points from votes. Gwangju FC's Lee Jung-hyo, despite receiving the most media votes, finished second due to limited peer support.

Jung Ho-yeon of Gwangju FC was awarded the Young Player of the Year, distinguishing himself in his first K League 1 season with two goals and four assists. Jung's contribution was crucial in Gwangju's five wins and one draw in matches where he scored or assisted.
