Korea’s wait for round-of-16 fate makes top 10 WC moment list

The national soccer team’s painful wait for the result of the Uruguay-Ghana contest after Korea’s dramatic victory over Portugal in their final Group H game was selected as one of Reuters’ “10 memorable impressions from the Qatar World Cup.”

The British news wire service on Dec. 17 introduced the Taegeuk Warriors on Dec. 2 gathering to watch the game between Uruguay and Ghana in what was called “South Korea’s nervous wait” after upsetting Portugal second on the list in the article headlined “Factbox: 10 memorable impressions from the Qatar World Cup.”

“When Hwang Hee-chan scored a stoppage-time winner for South Korea in their final Group H game the hard part was just starting,” Reuters said. “The Korean players then had to spend almost 10 agonising minutes in a tight huddle in the centre circle peering at phones, hoping Uruguay would not score another goal against Ghana.”

“Finally, with a last-16 place assured, they sprinted en masse towards their delirious fans.”

Saudi Arabia’s massive 2-1 upset over Argentina on Nov. 22 in their Group C match was the first moment introduced on the list.

Third was a photo of Argentine superstar Lionel Messi on Dec. 13 celebrating after his team scored its third goal in the semifinal versus Croatia. Others included the tearful exit of Cristiano Ronaldo after his team was eliminated in a quarterfinal loss to Morocco; the first female referee at a men’s World Cup in the final Group E game between Germany and Costa Rica; and Japan’s shocking 2-1 upset over Germany in their Group E match.
