National Assembly Approves Special Counsel Investigation into Marine’s Death

SEOUL — The National Assembly, dominated by the opposition, passed a bill on Thursday to initiate a special counsel investigation into the military's handling of a Marine's death last year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the special counsel will investigate allegations of interference by Yoon's office and the Ministry of Defense in the Marine Corps' internal investigation into the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun, who died during a mission in July 2023. The bill received unanimous approval in a 168-0 vote while members of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) boycotted the vote and staged a walkout. Rep. Yun Jae-ok, the PPP's floor leader, criticized the Democratic Party (DP) for expediting the bill's passage and announced a boycott of future parliamentary sessions until the end of the current Assembly's term.
