North Korean Delegation Visits Laos to Strengthen Defense and Strategic Cooperation

PYONGYANG -- A delegation from North Korea, led by a high-ranking official, has recently concluded a visit to Laos, emphasizing the country's intent to enhance its defense capabilities and foster strategic alliances. This visit is part of North Korea's ongoing efforts to solidify relationships with nations aligned with its socialist ideology.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the visit saw Kim Song-nam, the director of the international department at the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, engaging in discussions with Thongsavanh Phomvihane, the head of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party's external relations committee, last Friday. Laos marked the final destination in Kim's diplomatic journey, which also included stops in China and Vietnam.

During his stay, Kim also met with Thongloun Sisoulith, the secretary general of the Communist Party of Laos. Reports indicate that Kim expressed North Korea's intention to bolster "comrade-like and strategic" cooperation with Laos. This move comes as Pyongyang seeks to enhance its international ties following South Korea's establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba last month, a country with which North Korea has historically claimed a close relationship.

The visit's timing is notable, as Laos is set to host the annual ASEAN Regional Forum later this year, a key regional security meeting. North Korea's participation in this forum has been a topic of speculation, especially since the country has not sent its foreign minister to the forum since 2019. The delegation's trip to Laos has thus sparked discussions regarding the potential attendance of North Korea's top diplomat, Choi Son-hui, at this year's security conference.
