North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un Emphasizes Mothers’ Role in Supporting RegimeWeather Forecast for South Korea’s Major Cities on Tuesday, 5th November 2023

SEOUL - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has underscored the vital role of mothers in bolstering the regime's internal solidarity. This statement was made at the first national meeting of mothers held in North Korea in over a decade, as reported by state media on Tuesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, During his closing speech at the Fifth National Congress of Mothers, which convened for a two-day session in Pyongyang starting Sunday, Kim highlighted the critical "primary revolutionary task" of mothers in educating the younger generation. According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim emphasized the importance of family education in shaping the youth to become the main force of society and transforming family members into revolutionaries.

Experts suggest that the meeting, the first since 2012 and initially inaugurated in November 1961, was convened to address social discipline issues and the country's declining birth rate. In his opening remarks at the congress, Kim focused on the role of mothers in resolving "non-social" problems and combating the drop in birth rates.

Data from the U.N. Population Fund shows that North Korea's total fertility rate stood at 1.8 in 2023. South Korea's unification ministry noted that this was the first public acknowledgment by Kim of the country's birth rate decline, indicating serious concerns. An anonymous ministry official suggested that the congress aimed to prevent ideological deviation among the youth and support the regime by emphasizing the significance of family education.
