Olympic Champion An Se-young Calls for Reform in National Badminton Support Practices

Seoul – In a detailed social media post on Friday, Olympic badminton champion An Se-young broke her silence on the controversies surrounding her criticism of the Badminton Korea Association (BKA), advocating for more flexible and athlete-centered support practices.

According to Yonhap News Agency, her plea for reform is aimed at overhauling what she considers outdated and unreasonable customary practices within the national team's management, particularly in handling injuries. She highlighted her personal struggles with injury management, expressing frustration over the lack of tailored support that takes into account the specific needs and situations of individual athletes. An revealed that she faced significant challenges in receiving adequate care and attention after injuring her right knee during the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games final and hurting her ankle tendon in the pre-Olympic training camp earlier this year.

An’s call for change comes after her initial outburst against the BKA, which led to ongoing investigations by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee. She criticized the federation’s approach to athlete welfare, recounting her experiences of being dismissed when raising her concerns, and emphasized the need for proactive action from association officials to address these issues.

Furthermore, An Se-young extended an apology to her fellow South Korean Olympic team members for the potential distraction caused by her outspoken criticisms. She acknowledged her need to grow in understanding how to navigate life’s challenges beyond the sports arena, expressing a desire for open and honest communication to foster better relations between athletes and sports associations.
