Padres’ Go Woo-suk Battles for Roster Spot Ahead of Historic Seoul Series

SEOUL - Go Woo-suk, a promising relief pitcher for the San Diego Padres, is on the cusp of potentially marking his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut in an unprecedented setting: his home country, South Korea. With the Padres set to square off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Seoul, this opportunity is uniquely significant, yet Go faces considerable challenges to secure his place on the team.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Go is part of the 31-man squad traveling for the Seoul Series, the first MLB regular season games in South Korea, scheduled at Gocheok Sky Dome. However, the Padres need to reduce their roster to 26 by Wednesday, putting Go's position in jeopardy, especially following a difficult recent performance against the Los Angeles Angels where he relinquished five earned runs.

Expressing cautious optimism, Go conveyed his determination to South Korean media, acknowledging the uncertainty of his inclusion but emphasizing his commitment to continual improvement and resilience. Despite his success as one of the Korea Baseball Organization's (KBO) top closers, with 139 saves from 2019 to 2023, the transition to MLB has presented Go with new hurdles, illustrated by his 12.46 ERA during spring training.

In the lead-up to the regular season, the Padres are slated for exhibition matches against the South Korean national team and Go's former squad, the LG Twins. These games offer Go additional chances to refine his technique and demonstrate his readiness for the main league. Notably, Go's interactions with former teammates, including playful banter with Oh Ji-hwan of the Twins, highlight the camaraderie and competitive spirit that transcend leagues and borders.

As Go Woo-suk navigates this pivotal juncture, alongside fellow South Korean player Kim Ha-seong, his journey embodies the global reach and personal narratives that enrich the fabric of MLB.
