Pohang Steelers Triumph Over Jeonbuk for Their Fifth FA Cup Victory

Pohang — In a remarkable comeback, Pohang Steelers overcame Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors with a 4-2 scoreline to clinch their fifth FA Cup title in a thrilling match on Saturday at Pohang Steel Yard.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, the victory for Pohang ties them with Jeonbuk and Suwon Samsung Bluewings for holding the highest number of FA Cup wins in the history of the tournament. The club's previous successes in the top national football competition were in the years 1996, 2008, 2012, and 2013. In addition to the national glory, the win secures Pohang Steelers a place in the 2024-2025 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Elite tournament.

Pohang's head coach, Kim Gi-dong, shared a lighthearted pre-match request with his team, suggesting a win with a specific 4-2 scoreline, reminiscent of their 2013 semifinal match. The actual realization of this scoreline brought a mix of surprise and humor in the post-match sentiments. Kim, although critical of the team's initial performance, praised the players' determination and improved concentration which turned the game around in the second half.

Jeonbuk initiated the scoring early with Song Min-kyu taking advantage of a rebound at the 17-minute mark. Pohang responded with an equalizer right before the break, courtesy of Han Chan-hee who capitalized on a deflection off a Jeonbuk player. Despite Jeonbuk regaining the lead with Gustavo's penalty conversion, Pohang dominated the remainder of the match.

Zeca's 74-minute volley and a first goal for Pohang by Kim Jong-woo soon after shifted the momentum. Hong Yun-sang solidified the victory with his shot during added time, sealing the win for Pohang. This triumph marked the first trophy for coach Kim since his appointment in 2019. Kim's philosophy of fostering enjoyment in the game among players proved its merit with this significant achievement.

Kim Jong-woo, awarded the tournament's MVP, reflected on his decisive goal that not only served the team but also relieved him of the pressure he felt for his previous lack of contribution due to injury. His goal symbolized a redemption and gratitude for the unwavering support from the coach and teammates.
