SUWON — Samsung Electronics Co. and its primary labor union, the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), have resumed discussions over wage increases, restarting negotiations for the first time since the union initiated a strike last week.
According to Yonhap News Agency, both parties met in Suwon, south of Seoul, to outline the framework for further talks, including setting schedules, processes, and selecting representatives. This meeting follows the union’s acceptance of Samsung’s offer for an "unconditional resumption of talks," which came after the NSEU commenced a general strike on July 8, potentially threatening the company's operations. During the strike, the union has demanded a 5.6 percent basic pay raise for all members, a guaranteed day off to commemorate the union’s founding, and compensation for economic losses incurred during the strike. Despite the strike's duration exceeding ten days, Samsung Electronics has reported minimal impact on its production. The union represents about 31,000 members, roughly 24 percent of Samsung's total workforce of approximately 125,000.
