Significant Events in Korean History on This Day

1905 - Japan and Korea's Joseon Dynasty signed the Protectorate Treaty, a pivotal event leading to Japan's colonization of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945. Despite opposition from Korean Emperor Gojong, the treaty marked the end of the era of ruling dynasties in Korea.

According to Yonhap News Agency, it deprived Korea of its rights to sign international agreements and led to the dispatch of a Japanese resident-general to oversee diplomatic relations on the peninsula.

2006 - South Korea signed a deal with Vietnam to provide US$35 million for constructing a hospital in central Vietnam. The commitment, initially made during President Roh Moo-hyun's state visit to Hanoi in 2004, represented Seoul's largest-ever overseas grant at the time.

2015 - North Korea repatriated a 48-year-old South Korean man who had crossed into North Korea via the border with China earlier that year. The man was handed over to South Korea through the truce village of Panmunjom on the inter-Korean border.

These events highlight significant moments in Korean history, reflecting the nation's diplomatic and humanitarian endeavors, as well as the complexities of its relationship with neighboring countries.
