In 1984, the Agency for National Security Planning revealed the abduction of renowned movie star couple Shin Sang-ok and Choi Eun-hee by North Korea, a dramatic event that culminated in their escape during a visit to Vienna in 1986.

Further historical developments include the arrest of former Minister of Information and Communication Lee Suk-chae in 2001, on charges related to the abuse of power in selecting a personal communication service operator. In 2002, the country celebrated the opening of Yangyang International Airport, enhancing its transport infrastructure.
