South Korea and U.S. Space Force Enhance Cooperation on Space Security

Seoul - The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) in South Korea, Adm. Kim Myung-soo, met with U.S. Space Force Gen. B. Chance Saltzman on Tuesday to discuss strategic partnerships in space security. This meeting comes at a critical time as concerns grow over North Korea's advancements in space surveillance and its ties with Russia.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the discussions centered on enhancing joint space capabilities to counter threats from North Korea. The meeting also highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the two nations in space policy and operations. Both sides agreed to develop combined space operations and establish a military space consultative body. Plans for a tabletop exercise focusing on space domains were also set to advance their cooperative efforts.

Gen. Saltzman's visit to South Korea follows closely after Gen. Stephen Whiting, the commander of the U.S. Space Command, who also discussed space strategy issues earlier in the month. The engagement reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen space defense ties between Seoul and Washington, following the establishment of U.S. Space Forces Korea under the U.S. Forces Korea in December 2022.
