South Korea’s Mobile National ID Card App Experiences Service Disruption

Seoul, South Korea – The South Korean government's mobile identification card website and application faced disruptions on Friday, following a major system failure that previously caused nationwide difficulties in accessing state-approved documents.

According to Yonhap News Agency, From 1:54 p.m., the mobile identification card website and app became inaccessible, displaying a notification of service suspension to users. While the website resumed operations, the mobile ID app remained non-functional as of 3:30 p.m. The exact start time of the disruptions was unclear, as stated by the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corp., which manages the mobile identification card system.

This incident follows a significant system failure in the government's administrative network on November 17, which hindered public access to state-approved papers before being restored two days later. South Korea launched the mobile identification service in July last year and plans to expand it to include mobile national ID cards with the same legal status as traditional plastic ID cards in the latter half of the next year.
