Tragic Capsizing of Fishing Vessel Off Jeju Island

SEOGWIPO, Jeju - A fishing boat tragedy off the coast of Jeju Island resulted in the death of one crew member, with two others reported missing.

According to Yonhap News Agency, The Coast Guard disclosed that the incident occurred early Friday morning, involving a 33-ton vessel with a mixed crew of five South Koreans and five Vietnamese. Eight individuals were rescued by an adjacent fishing boat, though one South Korean was later pronounced dead due to cardiac arrest. Efforts to locate the two missing South Koreans, including the captain, are ongoing, with six Coast Guard vessels and three helicopters deployed amidst challenging weather conditions. An emergency headquarters has been established by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Office to oversee the rescue operations, highlighting the community's concerted response to this maritime disaster.
