Truck Driver Faces Charges After Menacing Incident Involving South Korean Opposition Leader

INCHEON – A truck driver in his 40s is under investigation for allegedly driving recklessly toward a police van escorting Lee Jae-myung, the chair of South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party (DP).

According to Yonhap News Agency, The incident occurred on the evening of February 20, as Lee was returning to Incheon after an event in Seoul. The accused reportedly engaged in threatening behavior, including honking and swerving into the lane of the van carrying Lee's police bodyguards.

During the preliminary investigation, the driver claimed his actions were driven by curiosity to verify the authenticity of the bodyguard procession and stated he was unaware of Lee Jae-myung's presence. The truck was also noted to bear messages critical of the government and the DP. This event highlights the security challenges faced by political figures in South Korea, coming shortly after Lee sustained a stab wound from an attacker in Busan in January. The police continue to offer protection services to leaders of major political parties in light of such security concerns.
