Veteran Democratic Party Lawmaker Park Byeong-seug Declines Reelection Bid

SEOUL — In a significant departure from his long-standing political career, Rep. Park Byeong-seug of the main opposition Democratic Party announced his decision to not pursue another term in office.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Park, who is currently serving his sixth term, expressed his desire to see a new, passionate, and balanced individual with a keen understanding of contemporary issues to succeed him in the National Assembly. “I've come to learn that it is time for me to let go of my role at the National Assembly,” Park stated, committing to continue his legislative duties with dedication until the term concludes next May.

Representative Park first entered the political arena in 2000, securing a seat in the Daegu Seo district during the 16th session of the National Assembly. He has successfully maintained his position through subsequent reelections in the same district. Additionally, Park held the prestigious role of speaker during the first half of the current legislative session.

The announcement marks the end of an era for Park in the National Assembly, where his tenure has spanned over two decades. His departure sets the stage for potential new leadership within the Democratic Party as the next session approaches.
