Veteran Lawmaker Lee Sang-min Leaves Democratic Party

Seoul - Representative Lee Sang-min, a five-term lawmaker, announced his departure from South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party (DP) on Sunday. He cited concerns over the party's direction under the leadership of Lee Jae-myung, claiming it had become excessively centered around the party leader.

According to Yonhap News Agency, in a statement to the press, Rep. Lee Sang-min expressed his decision to leave the DP, criticizing the transformation of the party into what he perceives as a personal platform for Lee Jae-myung. He referred to the party as a group of Gaeddal, a term used for DP members extremely loyal to Lee Jae-myung. This faction within the DP has faced criticism for their collective actions, including online campaigns against critics of the party leader.

Lee Sang-min, known for his non-mainstream views within the DP, had previously hinted at the possibility of leaving the party. His departure has fueled speculation about his potential move to the ruling People Power Party (PPP), especially with the parliamentary elections approaching in April.

As he leaves the DP, Lee Sang-min expressed his intention to explore a "new path" and is currently considering his future political course.
