Veteran Outfielder Kim Kang-min Joins Hanwha Eagles for 23rd KBO Season

Seoul, South Korea – Veteran outfielder Kim Kang-min, after a controversial departure from his long-time team, the SSG Landers, has decided to continue his playing career with the Hanwha Eagles. This move comes as a significant development in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO).

According to Yonhap News Agency, The Eagles announced that Kim Kang-min, aged 41, has agreed to play his 23rd professional season with them. The decision was made following a detailed discussion with Eagles general manager Son Hyuk. Kim's career spans 22 seasons with the SSG Landers and their predecessor, the SK Wyverns.

The transition to the Eagles occurred after the Landers left Kim unprotected in the KBO's "secondary draft," resulting in the Eagles claiming him. Veterans in the latter stages of their careers are often exposed in these drafts, providing opportunities for other teams to pick them up.

The Landers' decision not to reserve a spot for Kim on their protected list, despite offering him a coaching position for 2024, drew criticism from fans. The team focused on protecting their younger prospects and neglected to mark Kim as potentially retiring, which would have informed other teams of the associated risk in selecting him.

Kim's selection by the Eagles, seeking leadership for their young outfield, was unexpected for the Landers and sparked fan outrage over the handling of Kim's tenure. Following the draft, Kim's continuation in professional baseball was uncertain, but discussions with Son Hyuk, who had previously worked with Kim at SK Wyverns, led to his decision to join the Eagles.

In his statement, Kim expressed gratitude to Landers fans for their unwavering support over the years. He looks forward to contributing to his new team, acknowledging the opportunity to start anew. Kim's career achievements include five Korean Series titles and being named the series MVP in 2022.

Despite limited play in 2023, Son Hyuk highlighted Kim's leadership skills and intangible contributions to the team. Kim's career stats include a .274 batting average, 138 home runs, and 674 RBIs, ranking him ninth among active players in games played.
