North Korea announced it will convene a plenary meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party (WPK) later in December

SEOUL - This session aims to evaluate the state's policies for 2023 and establish objectives for the upcoming year. This information was released by the state media on Saturday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ninth plenary meeting of the eighth Central Committee of the WPK is scheduled for late December. The meeting's agenda includes a review of "the execution of the Party and state policies in 2023." This decision was reached during a politburo meeting on Friday, attended by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The KCNA added that the party plans to "discuss and decide on orientation of struggle for 2024 and important issues." These year-end plenary meetings are a regular occurrence in North Korea, focusing on assessing the year's achievements and setting goals for the following year.

This announcement follows the successful launch of North Korea's first spy satellite, Malligyong-1, on November 21. This achievement came after two unsuccessful attempts earlier in the year, in May and August.

During the politburo meeting, Kim Jong-un highlighted the country's progress, emphasizing significant developments in national defense capabilities. He urged all sectors and units to maintain their strong spirit and successfully conclude the year 2023.

North Korea has maintained that its satellite launch is a legitimate exercise of its right to strengthen self-defensive capabilities. The country has announced plans to deploy several more spy satellites in a short timeframe.
