South Korea and EU Launch First Joint Semiconductor Research Forum in Brussels

BRUSSELS — In a move to enhance their technological collaboration, South Korea and the European Union (EU) are inaugurating their first joint forum focused on semiconductor research in Belgium this week. This event marks a significant step in deepening the digital partnership between the two entities.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korea-EU Joint Researcher Forum on Semiconductors will convene in Brussels for two days, concluding on Tuesday local time. The forum aims to facilitate discussions on various semiconductor topics, including materials, neuromorphic computing, advanced chips, and chip packaging. This collaborative effort follows the digital partnership agreement signed by South Korea and the EU in 2022, intended to bolster technological ties between the two sides.

The forum is designed to be an annual event, with hosting duties alternating between the EU and South Korea starting from this year. Additionally, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that in July, four research projects focusing on the heterogeneous integration of semiconductors and neuromorphic chips will be selected for joint funding by the South Korean government and the European Commission.

Science Minister Lee Jong-ho emphasized the critical juncture at which the global competition for semiconductor technology dominance stands, as well as the shift in technological paradigms. He expressed confidence that cooperation with the EU would significantly enhance South Korea's competitive edge in the semiconductor industry.
