South Korea’s Major Parties Unite to Revise Itaewon Tragedy Investigation Bill

SEOUL - South Korea's ruling and main opposition parties reached an agreement on Wednesday to amend a special bill that mandates a new investigation into the 2022 Itaewon tragedy, which resulted in the loss of 159 lives during a Halloween event crowd crush.

According to Yonhap News Agency, The revised bill, originally passed by the Democratic Party in January but vetoed by President Yoon Suk Yeol, aims to establish a committee to investigate the root causes of the tragedy. According to representatives from both the ruling People Power Party and the Democratic Party, the amendment details concerning the committee's composition, operation period, and investigative methods have been finalized. These changes will be reflected in the bill set for passage in a plenary parliamentary session on Thursday.
