The North Atlantic Council, NATO's political decision-making body, on Friday approved the nomination of General Curtis M. Scaparrotti of the United States Army to be next Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

General Scaparrotti is currently commander of all United States forces in South Korea.

Upon completion of national confirmation processes, he will take up his appointment as successor to General Philip M. Breedlove of the United States Air Force, who has held the position since May 2013, according to a NATO press release.

The command changing ceremony is expected to be held at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons, Belgium in the spring of 2016.
