SEOUL, Dec. 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korea said Tuesday it will co-host a major disarmament forum with the United Nations this week.

The 17th U.N.�Republic of Korea Joint Conference on Disarmament and Non-proliferation Issues is to take place on Jeju Island on Wednesday and Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Participants will include South Korea's Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Yoon Soon-gu and U.N. High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu.

Around 50 other representatives from governments and intergovernmental organizations, as well as research institutes, academia and non-governmental organizations, will join the annual event as well, the ministry said.

The conference is meant to be a forum for the exchange of views on ways to counter challenges to the non-proliferation regime and related global mechanisms, including the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
