SEOUL, South Korea will chair the preparatory commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO PrepCom) next year, the foreign ministry said Friday.
Shin Dong-ik, ambassador to Austria and Permanent Mission to the International Organizations in Vienna, was elected as the 2019 chairperson of the panel during its 51st session under way in Vienna.
The envoy was chosen by the consensus of 184 signatories to the CTBT, the ministry said.
It's the first time for South Korea to assume the chairmanship of the commission in two decades.
It serves as a de-facto decision-making body related to the treaty.
The CTBT was adopted in 1996, but eight countries with nuclear programs, including North Korea, India and Pakistan, have yet to sign or ratify it.
